Assault Reports

In accordance with the Clery Act, Dartmouth College’s Department of Safety & Security keeps a public log of crimes on campus, including sexual assault. The log must be updated within 48 hours of an incident being reported. Although the log is made available to the public at the Safety & Security office, taking pictures of the log is not permitted and electronic copies are not provided. The only way to obtain information from the log is by writing it down. We rely upon DartmouthChange members local to campus to give us updated information, and so this section is sometimes out of date.

While Safety and Security occasionally sends out e-mail alerts to the community to warn of crimes such as computer and bike thefts, they rarely proactively distribute information on incidents of sexual violence.

We will publish all campus alerts related to sexual violence on campus and will update this page with the information from the campus crime log when possible to make it available to the public.

To the Dartmouth Community,

I am writing to follow up on the security alert sent earlier today regarding the sexual assault reported by a female Dartmouth undergraduate student at approximately 1:00 a.m. on Sunday, October 6, 2013. As indicated in my previous emails, the suspect is described as a tanned Caucasian male with dirty blonde hair and a large athletic build. He was wearing a navy blue shirt. The suspect stated that he was not a student at Dartmouth and was in the navy. The suspect may have attended a party at Beta prior to the assault. We have informed Hanover Police and are aggressively investigating this report. At this time we do not know if there is a connection between this incident and the one reported on September 21, 2013. We strongly encourage anyone having any information on this incident to contact Safety & Security at (603) 646-4000.

While the investigation continues, Safety and Security, in concert with other departments of the Dean of the College division, is taking steps to protect our community. Since the incident:

  • We have increased the number of officer patrols throughout campus.
  • We are following up on information provided by members of the community in response to the security alert.
  • Residential Education is exercising heightened vigilance within the residence halls. We encourage residents to lock their room doors, stay aware of their surroundings, and walk in groups.
  • The Dartmouth Safe Ride service is operated by students or a Safety & Security officer from 9 p.m. to 4 a.m. every day and is dispatched by the Department of Safety and Security. The Safe Ride service transports students who might otherwise have to walk alone across campus at night. Safety & Security will also provide safety escorts for faculty and staff during evening and nighttime hours upon request. For a Safe Ride or to request a safety escort call (603) 646-4000.
  • On-call staff is available 24 hours a day for the safety and well-being of our community. Please call 603-646-4000 and a Safety & Security officer can assist you or can connect you to a dean or counselor-on-call immediately.

Reports such as this can increase anxiety and concern in the community. Resources are available for anyone that may need support or to speak with someone. We are doing all we can to support those affected and to keep our community safe. As we learn more about this incident, we will continue to keep the community informed.

Best regards,

Harry Kinne
